Best Lodging in Downtown San Diego

With your Autograph Collection home base at Hotel Republic, the delights of Downtown San Diego—and there are many—are just a stroll, bicycle, or trolley ride away!

We may be a bit biased, but we think San Diego boasts one of the most dynamic and happening downtowns out there—what you’d expect, really, given the tagline of “America’s Finest City.” Here’s a quick sketch of just some of what you can experience mere minutes from your Hotel Republic accommodations.

The Gaslamp Quarter

Composing part of San Diego’s true historic center, the Gaslamp Quarter began as Alonzo Horton’s “New Town” more than 150 years ago and back in the day was quite the rough and rowdy neighborhood, harboring a slew of gambling halls and brothels. Now the Gaslamp Quarter is a vivacious collection of stores, restaurants, bars, and vintage Victorian-era architecture that make one of San Diego’s best-known destinations. You can get a taste for the Quarter’s remarkable history at the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House, one of San Diego’s oldest homes.

Little Italy

Just a couple of blocks north of Hotel Republic lies Little Italy, which unlike more than a few so-named districts in other cities remains a truly vibrant and celebratory center of Italian-American culture. The Little Italy Association of San Diego helps sustain the neighborhood’s spirit and hosts a whole wealth of annual shindigs, including Solo Italiano and the Little Italy Summer Film Festival. Saturdays year-round see West Cedar Street thronged with vendors as part of the Little Italy Mercado. And given the density and quality of restaurants, Little Italy easily ranks among San Diego’s best culinary destinations; Taste of Little Italy in June offers a great opportunity to experience its flavors.

The Waterfront

With a guest room or suite at Hotel Republic, you’re just a short stroll from San Diego Bay and the many attractions of Downtown’s waterfront. These include the USS Midway Museum, housed aboard the country’s longest-serving aircraft carrier; the 19th-century windjammer Star of India and other vintage vessels owned by the Maritime Museum of San Diego; the shops and eateries of Seaport Village; and the San Diego Convention Center, host to such high-profile yearly events as Comic-Con International.
