Best Winter Activities in San Diego, CA

A San Diego winter, needless to say, is a (delightfully) different sort of beast compared to what much of the U.S. experiences during this season. You won’t find blizzards, ice storms, and bone-chilling cold snaps here in America’s Finest City. (And, hey, if you want to see the white stuff, well, the high country of our mountains-to-ocean hinterland await.)

For many of our guests, a getaway to Hotel Republic during the winter is a welcome respite from subzero temperatures and shoveling. Plenty of sunshine, balmy weather, and all-season beaches are major draws. But this is also a season that comes chockablock with events, activities, and special attractions, and our boutique hotel in Downtown San Diego makes the perfect launchpad!

Here’s a sampler-pack look at just some standout winter activities in San Diego, with right-in-the-heart-of-it-all Autograph Collection accommodations here at Hotel Republic.

Go Whale-watching

From December into April, the coastline of San Diego County provides front-row seats for some of the best whale-watching anywhere in the world. Better than 20,000 North Pacific gray whales make a yearly round-trip between calving lagoons along the Baja Peninsula and feeding waters in Alaska, and you’ve got some 70 miles of oceanfront at your disposal for spotting the spouting, fluke-rearing leviathans as they pass by.

Many tour operators offer whale-watching boat trips. But fine opportunities to see grays abound on dry land, as well, with popular vantages including Cabrillo National Monument on the Point Loma Peninsula and the Birch Aquarium at Scripps.
