Hotel for Best San Diego Hiking and Biking

Among the great elements—of a very many awesome elements, mind you—defining America’s Finest City is the ease with which a San Diego local or visitor can hit the trails. Whether you’re looking for a hike through a lovely natural area or a pedal-powered tour of the fabled Southern California oceanfront, it’s easy to do with Downtown San Diego accommodations here at Hotel Republic.

Here’s a look at just some of the hiking and biking opportunities at your fingertips (and boot-tips) as a guest at our boutique Marriott Autograph Collection hotel.

Hiking In & Around San Diego

San Diego and its surrounds offer a myriad of awesome hiking opportunities, and these become essentially endless when you cast your net even farther and consider the mountains and deserts beckoning eastward. Within ready reach of your Downtown perch, meanwhile, you’ve got everything from coastal chaparral to riparian canyon forests, hillside oak woodland, and mountaintop outcrops to ramble.

Close to Hotel Republic, you can enjoy nearly 65 miles of trails weaving through the 8,000-odd acres of Mission Trails Regional Park. These routes range from easy, flat strolls to tough climbs, including the trails accessing 1,593-foot Cowles Mountain: the highest peak within San Diego’s city limits.

Then there are the shady oak and sycamore groves, benchland views, and other delights of the trail system within Los Peñasquitos (“Little Cliffs”) Canyon Preserve, which encompasses the namesake ravine as well as Lopez Canyon. Hoofing it along these trails, keep your eyes peeled for birdlife: Better than 175 bird species have been logged in this park, jointly managed by the city and San Diego County.

Other great regional hikes include the trails at San Elijo Lagoon and the Tijuana Estuary, the paths through rare bluff-top pine groves at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and the trek up to the iconic photo op of Potato Chip Rock on Mount Woodson.

Cycling on a Hotel Republic Getaway

Biking routes also abound in San Diego. The 25-mile-long Bayshore Bikeway is one of the best-known, and can be picked up along the Embarcadero just a hop, skip, and a jump from Hotel Republic. A pedal along the Pacific Coast Highway, meanwhile, lures you to La Jolla, Encinitas, Del Mar, and other oceanfront communities.

As a guest of ours here at Hotel Republic, you’ve got access to complimentary hotel bikes you can take for cycling forays, from neighborhood explorations to beach-hopping rides along the bayfront.
