San Diego lays claim to better than 140 craft breweries, among them some of the most legendary in the U.S. No surprise the city’s regularly ranked among the best beer towns on the globe.

Near at hand to your Hotel Republic guest room or suite, you’ve got an excellent representative lineup of breweries and taphouses. Really just a few steps away, for example, you’ve got Karl Strauss Brewing’s Downtown location (1157 Columbia St.), where you can sample such suds as the Boat Shoes Hazy IPA, Red Trolley Ale, and Windansea Wheat.

You’re also mere minutes away from the Little Italy tasting room of world-famous Ballast Point Brewing (2215 India St.): Try the brewery’s flagship Sculpin IPA if you’ve never had it before, plus such equally excellent creations as the Calm Before the Storm Cream Ale and Victory at Sea Imperial Stout.

Also conveniently close are the Stone Brewing Tap Room (795 J St.), where you ought to give the downright iconic Arrogant Bastard Ale a go, and Knotty Brewing Co. (842 Market St.), known for such brews as the Kicked-out Stout, Kangaroo Cowboy Amber, and Robot Barber Pale Ale.

On the wine end of the spectrum, you’ll find 100-plus wineries spread out across San Diego County, and plenty of opportunities to sample regional terroirs right here in the Downtown area. Head over to the Seaport Village Tasting Room (805 W. Harbor St.) of San Pasqual Winery, for example, or try Pali Wine Co. (2310 India St.).
