San Diego Pride 2018
More than 40,000 people attend the San Diego Pride Festival, which this year also brings together better than 50 organizations serving the LGBTQ community and 100-plus performers taking four festival stages. Those entertainers—LBGTQ themselves or proudly supportive of the community—include TLC, JoJo, Kim Petras, Graciela Beltran, LE1F, and Paris Sukomi Max.
The Spirit of Stonewall Rally
On Friday evening beginning at 6 PM, the Spirit of Stonewall Rally at the Hillcrest Pride Flag inaugurates the San Diego Pride Festival weekend with a commemoration of the 1969 Stonewall riots that ushered in the global LGBTQ rights movement and led to the establishment of San Diego’s festival in 1974.
Speakers at the rally include Christine Kehoe (the first openly LGBTQ elected official in San Diego County), Sakeenah Gallardo (a San Diego native who founded SPEAAQ Inc., which advocates for victims of sexual violence), Liat Wexler (presenting about #MeTooLGBTQ), and Danica Roem (the first openly transgender women elected to state legislature, delivering the keynote address).
Saturday & Sunday at the San Diego Pride Festival
Saturday’s festivities include the Pride 5K race at 9:30 AM, starting and finishing at University Avenue and Centre Street, followed by the free San Diego Pride Parade, which attracts some 200,000. This lively procession kicks off at 11 AM from the Hillcrest Pride Flag at the intersection of University Avenue and Normal Street and follows a 1.5 mile route along University, 6th Avenue, and Balboa Drive to Quince Drive. It comes followed up by the festival proper from noon to 10 PM at Marston Point, continued on Sunday from 11 AM to 9 PM.
